The 6th Annual Harold Hunter Day is going down at L.E.S. Skatepark on Saturday, October 13, from 1:00-5:00PM.
Established in 2006 after Harold’s untimely passing, and managed by the non-profit Harold Hunter Foundation, Harold Hunter Day VI will once again unite NYC’s skate community for a positive, fun-filled day of skateboarding and remembrance. The event commemorates a life well lived by celebrating the things Harold loved most: skateboarding, music, friends, family, and of course, New York City.
“HH Day is a day of togetherness where people from various boroughs, states and even countries come out to skate and bring the energy that Harold always brought–the feeling of having a great time with great friends no matter what your circumstance is,” said Alex Corporan, HHF Advisory Board Member and Harold’s longtime friend.
On Saturday afternoon, October 13th, Harold Hunter Day VI will go down at the L.E.S Skatepark on the corner of Pike and Monroe Streets in lower Manhattan. An all-ages skate jam will run from 1:00-5:00pm and feature product giveaways, appearances by pro skateboarders, live music from DJ Smoke L.E.S., pop-up Best Trick contests, and screenings of youth-made films from the Kickflip Project.
“Before Harold passed away, we always kicked around the idea of having one big session and party to bring all his friends together–now we do it in his honor each year and it’s always one of the best events in New York,” said Mark Nardelli, Co-Owner of 5BORO NYC and HHF Advisory Board Member. “Thanks to the close friends and family who have carried the torch for Harold Hunter Day for the past six years. Let’s do this HAROLD STYLE!!!”
As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Harold Hunter Foundation relies on support from the skate community and related outlets to achieve its mission of using skateboarding as a vehicle to provide inner-city youth with valuable life experiences that nurture individual creativity, resourcefulness and the development of life skills.
In this spirit, one of the HHF’s major initiatives each year is its Skate Camp Scholarship program. Since the organization’s inception, 68 scholarships have been awarded to local skaters to attend Camp Woodward and/or the Element YMCA Skate Camp through funds raised by the HHF. For 2013, the HHF hopes to provide 25 more Skate Camp Scholarships to deserving NYC youth.
With this goal in mind, a limited edition Harold Hunter Day VI t-shirt will be sold at the event with all proceeds benefiting the Harold Hunter Foundation. The t-shirt features a photo by Charlie Samuels of Harold “skitching” a yellow cab in 1989 under the watchful eye of the Twin Towers. Originally featured in Thrasher Magazine, more recently it was included in the critically acclaimed book, Full Bleed: New York City Skateboard Photography. After HH Day, a small quantity of t-shirts will be sold on www.airwalk.com and at the SHUT Store in Manhattan.
Harold Hunter Day VI is made possible through generous support from Airwalk, Zoo York, Supreme, Monster Energy, CCS, SHUT, City Lore, Rock Star Bearings, NYskateboarding.com, Trophy Grip, Reel Works, The Professionals: NYC Sound Company, and the collective New York City skateboard community.
A special Harold Hunter Day Pre-Party hosted by Alex Corporan and Michael Cohen will take place Wednesday night, October 10th, from 7:00-10:00pm at the White Rabbit (145 East Houston Street). A $5 donation and proper ID (21+) gets you in, with complimentary drinks served up by Pabst Blue Ribbon and Legend of Kremlin, while supplies last. DJ Smoke L.E.S. and TJ Mizell will be spinning, and raffle items will be provided by a bevy of top brands. All money raised will support the HHF’s Skate Camp Scholarship fund.
