Nocturnal's store front, home to many of Philly's lurkers

Located right off South Street, the wonderful touristy street in Philadelphia, is where youll find a very magical place, one filled with stories of adventure and sadness. Although there are a slew of skate shops in Philly, Nocturnal is the only one that is more of an orphanage than anything else. It is seriously like a foster home for most. Im sure when Kerry Getz first decided to start it, he didnt know it actually meant he was adopting ten to fifteen kids/grownups.
Its a place for people to store all their shit. A place to have shit sent to. A place to gamble at. A place to laugh. A place to cry when you fall off your bike. Its a place you can sleep at if you drink too much the night before. Its a place to sleep at if you have nowhere else to go. A place to set up a new shred stick. A place to check your Myspace. A place to read the new issue of Focus.
I could go on and on really, but that is what your typical skate shop is usually about anyway, right? Nocturnal also reminds me a lot of a never-ending episode of Seinfeld. Just go sit out front, or inside, of the shop for about an hour with every other lurker, and listen to the conversations. They are very in-depth ones about absolutely nothing. Youll hear about everything, from the grape jelly used in the pizza sauce around the corner, to about the time Ashley Simpson came into the shop to use the bathroom.
I can tell you this much though. If you are looking for a good game of skate, there are some pretty intense games that go on in front of the shop on busy 3rd Street. I think those games of skate get more intense than the éS ones, except they are usually decided over a beer from the bar across the street and not ten grand.
So next time you are in the City of Brotherly Love, make sure to skate on down to Nocturnal and check out all the action. If you dont feel like going home, stay the night. Im sure that youll be more than pleased with the accommodations and entertainment.
